Trans people are everywhere

Trans people are everywhere!

Earlier this week I was casually chatting with one of my neighbours. They did not know what I did for a living, but dropped a comment into our conversation which prompted me to ask for their pronouns.

As the conversation evolved it became apparent that they are non-binary and just starting out on their journey – that’s not to say their gender variance is new to them, just that they are only now learning the language and feeling confident enough to fully embrace who they are and share their experiences with others.

A recent piece of research from the US put the number of people who know a trans person, or someone who goes by gender neutral pronouns at a whopping 42%. Yet, according to the same study, comfort levels with using gender-neutral pronouns to refer to someone, have remained static.

Trans people are a glorious part of our world. Now is our opportunity to be proactive in getting comfortable with gender variance.

There are plenty of free resources available, you just have to be interested enough to make the effort.

Don’t wait until your kid, friend or family member comes out, or brings home their new trans or non-binary friend or partner to learn more. Don’t wait until an employee has a negative experience, or worse puts in a complaint because you are waiting for the “right moment”.

Now is that moment. What are you waiting for?
